Yom Kippur, the 6th of October, 1973 – at midday, the armies of Egypt and Syria launched a coordinated attack against the State of Israel. This all-out war ended after 19 grueling days, on October 19th. During the intense combat and amidst innumerable heroics, Israel took a heavy toll: 2,656 dead, 7,251 wounded and 294 prisoners of war. This year, Israel marks the 50th anniversary of this tumultuous war – a war whose mark is felt even to this day by the whole of Israeli society.
